  • Georgia Colonel "Frank W. Johnston"?

"It having been satisfactorily ascertained that Frank W. Johnston, a private in the Second Company, while on a furlough, and residing in Georgia, had enlisted in the service of the rebels as a colonel of infantry, he was, at the December meeting, unanimously expelled." - Emmons Clark, History of the Second Company of the Seventh Regiment (N.Y.S.M.)

    Any idea who Johnston was?

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

There was a F.W. Johnson that served as a Captain in the 59th Georgia.

A cursory search of Captain F. W. Johnson's [very possibly "Johnston"] service records on Footnote shows that he was elected to 1st Lieutenant in May of '62, then promoted to Captain in June of '62. No details are shared, but he is listed as "Under Arrest" during the August 1862 muster roll, and next in the record is his deserter record from Savannah in '65 where he is noted as requesting "to go North" (he as 45 years old at the time).

        Could be our culprit...

          Hey Eric,
I think you may be close. I exhausted my resources last night and could not find anything very concrete. Your Johnson sounds like the turncoat style of this Frank Johnston! His true name could have been Franklin or Francis with an often associated nickname of Frank. My ancestor was a Francis, but went by Frank.
          Interesting stuff!
