Re: Szabo's sight down?
Hallo!
They lost their server and are looking for another. They are "down" for an unknown spell.

It is indeed down for the unforeseeable future. As Curt mentioned, we are looking at several options and are working diligently. I'll post on here again when it is back up and running.Ross L. Lamoreaux

Re: Szabo's sight down?
Curt is correct. The Civil War Reenactors Forum, also known as Bob Szabo's site, and known in some corners as OZ, is down for a period yet to be determined.
We had an announcement up for several days, but I imagine some folks missed it.
Years ago, the dedicated servers used by the Civil War Reenactors Board were funded from a few private pockets. For more than a decade, the net access has been provided at no cost to us by an individual with a larger business in such things. As is the case with business in these hard times, conditions change with little warning, and we no longer have this free access.
Since Szabo's board was "built with the beginner in mind" it needs different funding model that the sort of subscription service used here. On any given evening, for every 'registered' member on the board, there are between 5 and 10 'guests'--casual readers, folks just looking into hobby information,or the shy folks that read a lot, but never post anything.
At present, we have a full backup, the system servers secured, and are exploring costs for the access needed, and ways of funding that. As usual, Paul Calloway has been helpful providing suggestions in that process. Each of our boards has a different electronic culture, and each serves a particular area of the wide continum of the many hobbies contained within the phrase "Civil War Reenacting". The AC staff has always been generous with time and energy with Szabo's---and we are grateful. Short staffing is always a problem with any board, but especially so with such a wide range of users as we have at CWR. Patience runs thin, and we burn through moderating staff quickly.
Meantime, I'm trying to make the gear shifting mental leap from organizing a week long wagon train for some of the most skilled folks in the hobby earlier in the year, to dealing with a civilian Tent Town planted smack in the middle of the Solid Mainstream---and have just lost my primary means of communication with its inhabitants, five weeks away from Twin Rivers...........could it be that I have reached my alloted amount of patience from the Reenacting Goddess :wink_smil?Terre Hood Biederman

Re: Szabo's sight down?
I've been off the boards for a few days. Saw the gentle urging on Saturday night to download/print topics of interest but unfortunately didn't get around to it right away, so am hoping that past threads will be retained as part of the "new" site. Hmmm -- several of the threads I was going to print out involved comments from Comrade Curt and Irrepressible Ross. I'm hoping I retained some of that knowledge but guess if I become confounded on the same topic I'll repost my queries. Thanks in advance.

Re: Szabo's site down?
Irrepressible Ross? I like that much better than Reprehensible Ross. Thanks Paul, we'll post more as we know more. We don't anticipate a great purge of info, but as we all have seen on here and other modern conveyances, results will, and do, vary. Thanks Chris for posting the link to Common Ground. We are plugged back in with another host and expect things things to start cycling back through within the next 24/48 hours, as the systems pick up our new location.
Just as the board went down, some one had posed a question concerning late registration for Michael Comer's adjunct Company at Twin Rivers. Men can still register for this event through the website--the registrar has just arrived home from five days of heavy site work, so the door has not fully closed for that part, though I cannot speak for any deadlines for ration issues.
I will say that I walked Federal camps as positions were marked for water sources. Every effort has been made to free the Federal campaign camp areas of modern intrusion, including digging slit trenches instead of placing plastic houses. If someone is desirous of a bath in the November breeze, there are ponds available. And a strong pass system and Provost guard is in place to protect the army from hostile civilians.....:wink_smilTerre Hood Biederman

I had a friend in middle school who was blind. She was a really sweet gal and never said a sour word about not being able to see. I guess you never really know what you've got until its gone. I missed the zoo.Nathan Willar
