  • Food for thought

I recently heard that the average Amish man takes 10,000 and 12,000 steps a day. That roughly 5 to 6 miles per day. The average modern non Amish man takes about 2000 steps a day.

I imagine that a man in our time period would be similar to the average Amish man in this regard.

    Robert,
I grew up in Northeast Ohio, right smack in the middle of Amish country, and we always used to laugh about Amish and reenacting. I always said that I would like to get 25 Amish guys together and outfit them for my own reenacting company. Can you imagine the period impressions?? Some of the beards and hairstyles that the old order sport are straight out of the 1860s. But that conscientous objector thing might be a problem :wink_smil

      Rick,

We might be able to get around that C.O. designation by utilizing those Amish in the QM/Commissary Dept. and as manual laborers. Heck, we might even be able to replace our "brisk walker" in Crabby's Kids with a real "runner".

        Well.....

I might even be able to replace a complete group of coffee coolers and slackers from the QM/Commisary! ;^)

I heard that report too. It also mentioned the the average Amish women in the study walked 7000 to 8000 steps a day (not to shabby either). The author of the report was talking on NPR and said that one day he greeted one of the men returning home, and asked for his pedemeter reading.

The man looked, and said "50,000 steps".

The author said, "That's 25 miles!"

and the Amish gentleman replied, "Yes, and the weren't easy miles either!"
