Re: More CW Ordanance found in VA..and more overreaction
By all means, let's blow up these pieces of history. Have they not heard of disarming the device? As I understand, there are remotely operated gizmos (technical term) for doing such.
Just a thought.

The fuse appears to have a CS brass time fuse adapter. That type ball is very easy to disarmed especially for an EOD unit.Jim Mayo

Re: More CW Ordanance found in VA..and more overreaction
Although and EOD unit could have successfully disarmed this particular piece of ordnance, the risk of handling a live explosive is still at large. So risk the life of a bomb tech, a million dollar piece of equipment, or simply just dispose of it. Unfortunately I do not believe the civil war community would not have learned or gained anything from keeping this particular piece.

Re: More CW Ordanance found in VA..and more overreaction
Not surprising, Explosive Ordnance Disposal units always detonate live ordnance when found, they will not attempt to defuse a shell unless under direct orders to do so, it is standard procedure in militaries throughout the world. Sorry, I honestly can't blame them.
If they had to "preserve" the tons of ordnance scattered throughout the Western Front in France from the 1914 - 1918 War or even just a fair representative of all of it, where would we be?Thomas Pare Hern
