I've shown up at an event, having flown in period dress, aided in rolling rounds and stacking said rounds in ammo crates, and flown home in the same clothes. No problems. I've fired a flintlock under those conditions. Once, I've aided in making cannon rounds. I figure I'm picking up a certain amount of residue from such. I have no idea if its as much as you fellers do. My other time period is 18th century, and then, the real women do fight...
My wool dress has not been cleaned in several years. My coat never has been. I made it in 2001.
I've carried on Federal Issue Mess Kettles wrapped in a pillowcase and stuffed in a carpet bag. Black, nasty, covered in soot. Goodness knows those things get toxic. :tounge_sm No problem, though one did get a nasty dent in the overhead bin.
Only mishap I've ever had is crushed bandboxes in the searched and repacked checked luggage at the Buffalo Airport coming out of Winter 64. Every man jack who flew out of that event had breakage in his checked luggage. Mine just wasn't mustard and pickle bottles........
My checked luggage tends to carry things that won't be disasterous if they don't arrive--like blankets or the spinning wheel. Based on the little love notes TSA leaves, I've gotten a baggage search about 10% of the time. I went through a long span where I flew to events 4-5 times a year, and racked up business trips with the same luggage that carried those whuffy blankets and painted ground cloths.
Still, you are really gonna be sunk if the checked bag does not show up---lost, misdirected, whatever, and likely having little to do with the contents and their exposure. That's why I do fly wearing what I need or have it in my carpet bag carryon. If that's not comfortable for you, then ship ahead. If your stuff is not there, then you'll know to scratch up something else from the loaner gear.
My whole thought process on flying in period dress, in what I pack, and carry on, in what level of personal search I expect and allow time for, comes from discussions I had with a cousin--employed by TSA at the start of the agency, and eventually a trainer both here and abroad.
Y'all Louisana fellers do realize you can board the Cresent at 7:00 am and step off the platform at Manassas 24 hours later, without even changing trains, AND get to sit around in the club car and play poker? Jake Jenette tells me at least one set of Confederate troops will parade right past that station......and you can walk your own luggage right on to that train and put it right overhead where you can keep an eye on it.....
