What rank are you looking for? Do you need the really huge beard? Dress or dervice uniform?

      Re: David Dixon Porter

      Good Questions.
This will be for a painting being done by Nathan Greene of Abraham Lincoln getting off the boat in Richmond after that city's fall. Porter was with Lincoln and will be portraied in the painting. I THINK Porter was a Rear Admrial then, and we would need the full beard. As for the uniform, I would need to research if on campaign if he would have has a service uniform, or because he was with the president he would have had a dress uniform. To be honest, I know little about the Navy at that time period. Maybe could get some help from others more knowledged in this forum???
      Thanks,

At that point in the war the full dress (and even undress) uniforms were suspended. It is most likely that Porter would have worn his service dress uniform.
