    Here is an interesting 1864 article on Charles "Doc" Jennison. It claims that Jennison was known as the "gay Yorker" and that became corrupted into "Jayhawker."

    I always assumed it came from the theiving habits of jaybirds (like bluejays) and referred to the setting free (stealing, to the slave owners' eyes) of slaves. In either case - I figure "gay Yorker" meant something different then than it might be taken to mean today!
