  • Question: Specific hat style

I'm trying to find the maker of a particular hat style, to replace the one I've used to the point of deterioration. Unfortunately I do not recall where I got the hat so many years ago. I've looked at sites for Clearwater Hats as well as Tim Bender, but the styles available are not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for one with a telescoped crown, wide 4" brim that is turned up at the edges. I can think of 2 images of the particular style I am looking for. One is from the famous photo of 3 CS prisoners captured at Gettysburg (the guy on the far right side). The other example (I know this one from a movie, but I know I've seen this style in period photos before) is the hat Clint Eastwood wore in The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I know, I winced typing Clint Eastwood on the AC forum just as much as you probably winced reading it. Does anyone out there know of a hat maker that makes a similar period-correct style? I appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks!

    Kinda like this? http://www.benderhats.com/telescopecrown.html

Dirty Billy offers one kinda like the Josie Wales hat called the "Sam Clark" but it's flat top, maybe you could have him telescope it for you.

Rich, if you get Tim Bender on the phone about the certain style that you want, more times than not he'll try to make the hat to your preference. Give it a shot.

Tim did an amazing job on my flat top bowler! It's by far my favorite hat, and he is a pleasure to speak to and do business with.
