  • Government Shutdown?

If the Feds shut down on Friday, will(could) any upcoming events be effected?

How could this effect our hobby?

    Re: Government Shutdown?

A few of the guys from the Hedgesville Blues plan on doing a small living history at Stop #3 at Petersburg this weekend. We've been told that, in the event of a government shutdown, the Park will close, the living history will be cancelled, and we'll be sent away. Poor timing for the Charleston stuff this coming week! Some other guys from the group are on their way there at the moment and are wondering about the status of programs planned for Sumter. This is all quite unfortunate for me, as I won't be going into work during a shutdown, and I would actually have time to go to Charleston if that event was still going to happen!

      Re: Government Shutdown?

In one of my darkest moments, I considered entering the content writing market. I even reached out to a company and they offered me an assignment. They said 1,500 words in 48 hours on a topic I knew nothing about, complete with multiple interviews over the weekend. I told them no.

I need to add, there has been plans made by an upcoming event, just in case this happens. "No need to unpack the truck."

No official word yet from the NPS at Fort Sumter. If anything happens we should wait on official word from them. If we receive an email, I will post in quickly. I would not rely on the speculation of any news sources.

            Re: Government Shutdown?

From the emails I've been getting, a plan B is in the works if the parks Moultrie and Sumter are shut down. Many events were planned outside of the forts anyways.(including a fireworks display on the 12th- 14th) I'll be an artillerist with the 1st U.S. Artillery inside Fort Sumter for 6 days. Sure I'll be dissapointed if the fort is closed but I trust in the powers that be that Plan B will be great as well. As long as I'm in Charleston for the bombardment and surrender, I can cross that off the bucket list!

              Re: Government Shutdown?

I attended three meetings today and a camp was laid out at Fort Moultrie and another camp 500 yards North of the Fort Moultrie location. Fort Moultrie still in sight. The event will proceed regardless. The Garrison at Fort Sumter will also stay on Sullivan's Island and have access to the beach. This is in case of a shut-down. Rumors are flying high that the event will be cancelled and I can assure you that the event will go on. All the planned artillery will go on as planned. Major Anderson is with me right now and we will make it work.
