  • Excellent Work at Fort Sumter & Moultire

I visited the "Firing on Fort Sumter" event yesterday and I have to give credit where it's due. This event has done great honor in commemorating the opening shots of the War Between the States. The reenactors in attendance were properly uniformed, hard working and they made a tremendous effort to reflect the early war standards.

All of the visitors and National Park Service were very impressed with the program. The Palmetto Battalion, the 26th North Carolina, and the 1st U.S. Artillery with Silas Tackitt really went a step up and were serious about what they were representing. If the rest of the 150th events are like this, we will have a lot to be proud of.

In my opinion, any campaigner would have felt right at ease with this event. It had all the elements of a quality "ebufu" style event. Standards were enforced and respected. All of the Soldiers were either drilling, standing guard, giving demonstrations, performing garrison life or maintaining equipment. Many will stay an an entire week in this mode. Almost all of the participants bought new uniforms and equipment.

I have a few photos here on Facebook:

The participants of this event deserve high praise for their efforts.

    Mr. Deese,
First please let me say thank you for the kind words. I was the 2nd Sgt. of the 1st US Company E inside Sumter and your kind words are much appreciated. I just walked through the door about an hour ago and have to say as well that this event truly gave due respect. All our soldiers and those else-where put in the time and dedication to make everything fall into place. I know we left a few pards there who will be returning on Thursday, and I only wish I could have stayed. Getting to raise and lower the colors over Sumter and folding the flag is a feeling I will never forget. Good job to everyone involved and thank you to all who helped!

I'd like to say great job by all in attendance too! My wife and I came down for a long weekend to take it all in as spectators. I only wish there was more media coverage of the event. There seemed to be next to zero coverage locally in Charleston. Unfortunate for such a great event but we throughly enjoyed the visit and thanks to everyone that made it all come together so well!

        Eric:

I did meet reporters from CNN, the Washington Post & the Boston Globe. All of them had very positive things to say and were impressed by what they saw. The local newspaper hasn't been real keen about reporting anything outside of downtown Charleston, they have mostly ran historical articles, but there has been very little attention given by the local press to the reenactments and living histories.

I ventured over to Fort Moultrie just about the time it opened this morning and was impressed by the work and dedication displayed by the participants. I spent several hours taking photographs and talking with members from a group from North Carolina. I later ventured over to the camp at Patriots Point.

The Moultrie camp appeared to be keeping to a more authentic living history approch to actions; except for one officer walking around talking on a cell phone.

The Patiots point camp appeared to be less authentic, but more reenacting and teaching, especially the cannon and cavalry demo's.

I found both to be excellent teaching tools and very much enjoyed myself. If my wife was not having a minor "procedure" performed tomorrow, I would be in downtown at day break for the festivities.

Thanks again to all the hard work and dedication,
          Randy

From the Co. E standpoint, I had a great time. We were ill-prepared from a soldier's standpoint, but we did all we could in support of SC and the Confederacy! And I can say that drinking while on Guard duty is not tolerated.
Thanks Mr. Sinclair for all you did and to the US government for not shutting us down.
