  • fabric for Federal headgear

I am trying to find out where to purchase the correct material for making federal forage caps. I am not sure on the proper weight of the fabric, it seems to me it would be the same weight as federal issue shirts, am I correct?

cap cloth 6/4 16 ounce per linear yard. You need to search for a straight and tightly woven well finished fabric weiging 16 ounces per yard while 1.5 yards wide.

It is worth asking but they are not offering this material regularly on their homepage.

Hainsworth's line of "superfine" or "melton" wool apparel fabric would be ideal. They also still offer legitimate cap cloth but only if you have it custom dyed but the price would probably be hard to justify. Their "doeskin" would work as well as there are plenty of original caps made from fabrics other than plain woven cap cloth. The color of originals I've handled runs the gamut from dark black-blue to medium greenish-blue. There's even a few that have a tinge of purple to them.

Kochan & Phillips Deep Indigo Blue superfine is what I use on antebellum hats and shakos. Its a very nice deep blue/black with a good sheen on it. Shoot James Kochan an email and he'll set you up: jameskochan@comcast.net

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.
