    Hello Gents :D ,
Can anyone tell me where to find a ONE piece oak staff good for use as a flag pole? All I can find are the two piece with the metal sleeve joint. I know these were not around in the Civil War. I can't find them anywhere. Thanks for any help in advance..this is driving me crazy...
    Sincerely,
    Nathan Milbury

Do you think you can post your findings?

My apologies, I was referring to Confederate flag poles. At the Civil War Center at Tredegar Iron Works, they have a collection of Confederate Flag poles, some oak, some local woods(tree branches and such) all of them aroung eight feet tall and one piece. I don't want to jump to conclusion based on only a few flag staffs, but if any one knows where to find a Confederate two piece pole can they point me to the right direction. One would think that brass for the joint would be bette rused elsewhere. I have seen the Federal two-piece poles from photographs, but never Confederate ones. Besides having to make one oneself, are there any commercially available eight foot oak poles?
        Sincerely,
        Nathan Milbury

It would be great to see your research on the subject too since little has been said about it. One would think that brass for the joint would be better used elsewhere. Hi,

            Contact me privately at:

            markj@purdue.edu

and I can send you some interesting information on this subject. After much research, I recently commissioned an "informed recreation" of a 32nd Tennessee 2nd Pattern Hardee flag (the original apparently has not survived). In the end, we elected to use a one-piece, 8-foot stained maple staff (with spearpoint finial and brass ferrule). This is similar to what would have been used for a standard Federal camp color.

            Regards,

              Nathan

I'm trying to find a supplier of ash and oak for you in the Tidewater.

If you call the Maritime Museum they may be able to supply you with the name of a maker of boat or punt poles in your area. This is the long, traditionally cypress pole used to push a skiff around in the marshes and shallows. They could produce or supply a raw one in ash or oak.

Finding, cutting, drying and shaping a simple pole in your area is not difficult at all. I know of huge stands of scrub oak out towards Yorktown.

If you don't have any luck, contact me via ''private message'' and we can discuss getting you one.

                Garrison,
Thanks for your input, I never even thought of that (and I go to the Mariner's Museum all the time :tounge_sm ).
                Thanks,
