  • Tennessee Uniforms?

I am interested in knowing if anyone has done any serious study on the uniforms of Tennessee Troops, in particular the 60th Tennessee Infantry (sometimes referred to as the 79th), a unit which was later designated as "Mounted". I'd be interested in knowing research leads, as I haven't been able to glean much yet from various archives.

Two of my 3rd Great Grand Uncles it turns out served in Co. I of this regiment and both were captured during the Vicksburg Campaign, one at Big Black, and the other on July 4th. The one captured at Big Black died in the Army hospital in Chester, PA.

I'm not putting an impression together or anything for this regiment, but I am curious as to uniforms and equipment.

To expand on the research I have done, I did find the following in Captain W.A. Wash's "Camp, Field, and Prison Life...":

"I was, on the 24th April, appointed by General Vaughn on a board of survey to examine army clothing, to be issued to the troops. Most of the pants were of goods manufactured at Lexington, KY., and brought out by General E. Kirby Smith in the Fall of 1862."

Wash does not further elaborate. He was my ancestor's company commander and his book in interesting reading. I'd be happy to hear suggestions or thoughts on the items as brought out of Kentucky by Smith.

      Re: Tennessee Uniforms?

While Tennessee troops uniforms greatly varied from different times of the war, which theatre they were invloved in , and different locations in said theatres, it can be somewhat difficult. I had Tennessee ancestors that were involved in both the AoT and ANV. It's been a chore trying to do research on them. I had two 2nd grt grandfathers who rode with Forrest, in the 4th and 8th Tenn Cav. Through family research it seems that they predominately preferred civilian attire. Here is a great place to start, with several references to Tennessee (CS) uniforms , if you haven't already done so.

        Eric,
I greatly appreciate the response. Of the three Tennessee Confederates I'm related to, two were in the 60th Infantry as mentioned and the other served as a 2nd Lt. in the 5th Tenn. (McKenzie's) Cavalry.

I'll have to pick up that book.

        Cheers,

          Dear Sir,
There are several old books named Confederate Faces ,More Confederate .While the pictures in them are not listed in any order you can see a lot of Tennessee troops in the books . I would check my local library first in the genealogy Dept. I have several of the books at home some where and I look back at them from time to time .

              Mr. Dolan,

I noticed that you mentioned an ancestor that served in McKenzie's 5th TN Cavalry. I've been trying to research this regiment, especially what arms the troops in this regiment were issued. I've been relic hunting an area where I'm almost certain that the 5th had camped while near the Hiwassee River, and so far have found a good number of .54 caliber round balls. Based on this, I'm thinking that the troops were armed with either the Lorenz, or the Mississippi, but I suppose one cannot rule out the Merrill carbines.

                Roy,
I know very little so far about the 5th Tenn Cav. (CS), but have researched the other regiment in my May post to some degree. My ancestor in the 5th was Lt. Russell A. McNabb.
