  • Any experience with Richards Patented Anti-Sunstroke Cushion?

    Hey All:

Does anyone have any experience (either positive or negative) with the Richards Patented Anti-Sunstroke Cushion (preferably the one made and sold by Nick ******)? Apparently it is a reproduction of a 1862 patented pad that you dip in water, ring out and put in your hat to cool off in really hot weather. I was just curious whether it worked and how heavy it is.

    Thanks!!

Are you looking for period uses of this item, or a product review of the recreated item? If it is the latter then you might want to ask the gent who recreated the item for sale.

Actually, I am looking for both! I am curious how common the use of these cushions were during the Civil War. Also, while I am sure Nick would give me his honest assessment of the cushions that he manufactures, I was curious to hear from other reenactors who might have used these cushions to combat the heat during events.

Since you asked for opinions, here is mine: dont' waste your money. I bought one years ago from Dirty Billy. I found it did not cool me off any more than just pouring a little watter on my handkerchief and putting that on my neck. After a few attempts... it sat in my drawer for 10+ years until I finally sold it last year on a blanket trade.

Well I know one was lost at Resaca, last weekend and the owner liked his. If it was found please pm me so it can be returned to its owner. Thanks

I have used a Dirty Billy version of this for several years and, despite the previous comments, I have found it useful on very hot days. It does actually help though it requires frequent refreshment of the water.
I have found it very cooling if you swirl it in the air to start the cooling by evaporation before you use it much as you would do with a handkerchief. This will further extend the cooling effect between wetting.
I am now awaiting an NJ********* version and will give a comparison when received if it gets hot enough.

It was one of those make money items offered by sutlers to the troops along with body armor and cork insoles. Some things worked and some didn't.

I have found a good way to cool off especially when standing in formation listening to someone talk who is probably standing in the shade is to pour water on the top of your feet. At least your feet will be cool.
