  • 4 wing CCI cap

My unit is looking to buy percussion caps in bulk. Looking at the price increase of the German caps there is a cheaper alternative of a new (not sure how new) 4 wing CCI cap that supposedly doesn’t have the fragment problems of the 6 wing cap.

Has anyone tried these and are they any good. I’m a little leery at this point.

    Re: 4 wing CCI cap

There is some discussion about the CCI 4-wing caps on this forum already (Search function). And there is similar discussion on that other forum along the same lines. Mostly favorable, from what I can gather, but you'll need to read and decide. One of the problems, as with any cap, is that the hammer may not be properly aligned with the cone and strikes off center. That can cause fragmentation, IMHO.

I did a search but came up short. Must have missed it. I’ll check again and look at that other forum while I’m at it.

      Thanks

My unit uses the CCI 4 wing and they work just fine and don't splinter as much as the 6 wing but the down side is they are not as "hot" as the German ones.

I used the CCI 4 wing caps for years when I shot in the N-SSA. Never had any problems with them. They are good caps in my opinion. To each his own I guess but I've shot thousands of live rounds with them and never had a fail! Then again I always was a clean freak with my firearm, as you should be with a musket! That's the majority of the problem with guns failing is the owners poor care.

Eric, I agree that a musket should be cleaned properly. Although others don’t always agree with me. If I were in a war and knew it could save my life I would keep it as clean as possible. I rarely have a misfire.

Glad to hear that the CCI caps are good. Now one company won’t have the monopoly on 4 wing caps.

              Eric,
No problem with our unit using them.

                  Re: 4 wing CCI cap

I recently started using these caps, and my only question is; Do those who have a weapon in which a 90 degree angle exists in the bolsters have problems? I have an 1822 (dated 1825) Springfield and an 1809 (dated 1830) Potsdam, and the 1809 misfires frequently...my only explanation for this is when the weapon is leveled for firing (blanks), the powder falls to the bottom of the barrel, thus not leaving enough powder to catch. I don't recall having these may issues with my 1809 PRIOR to using CCI caps.

I understand we're talking a large barreled original and possibly comparing it to smaller caliber weapons, but I am curious to see if others have had the same issue. I have had little issues however with the '22.

Interesting Brandon. Have you tried using different cones or drilling out the holes a little on the cones? Sometimes this helps.

I have done this in the past with other weapons I have owned, but have not yet on this one. I may give that a try. Thanks!
