            Re: Bugle Calls

            Hi,

You might want to contact R. J. Samp directly to see if he can provide his MIDI files:

            rjsamp@ameritech.net

or, if all else fails, buy George Rabbai's book/CD:

Infantry Bugle Calls of the American Civil War. George Rabbai's instructional book. 40 pages of instruction and score for the beginner as well as the advanced Bugler. Includes a CD with narration and spoken commands as well as all 49 bugle calls as performed by the author on the Bb infantry bugle. Also includes anecdotes and stories from the accounts of infantry soldiers of the CW................................$17.95 (at Fall Creek Sutlers)

            Regards,

            Mark Jaeger

                Re: Bugle Calls

Careful about FMA. Good people, great site....but most of the calls that they obtained from me are the MODERN calls...not the ACW calls.

                Try
                ftp://ftp.rjsamp.com/ACW_Bugler/

                They're ALL up there......

how to learn the Bugle Calls

Have been working on this with you all since 1997, and here's the deep down secret. If you can not recognize a tune/sing a melody then you will never learn the calls...... once the firing starts and your ears are zinged by percussion cap and blank cartridge explosions...plus near by artillery going of..... you won't be able to hear more than a few notes in the wind.....

If you happen to be off of the firing line, or in camp, then there's a good change you will be able to recognize some of the 49 infantry, 37 cavalry, and 39 artillery bugle signals AND an additional couple of unit prelude calls that identify your manuever element.

The secret to learning the calls is not to read the sheet music, listen to a website midi file, or even buy a perfectly crafted superbly sounded bugler's tape or CD like George Rabbai's or Jerry Pollard's works of art. I have YET to meet anyone in ACW reenacting that has learned the calls in this manner, unless they were a musician/musically talented.

The way to learn the calls is through repetitively hearing the calls and singing the ditties (the made up words) to them. We tried 5 or 6 different formats of call versus command versus ditty back in 1997 and 1998. Floated a few dozen tapes around the country and guys like Bob Braun, John Wedeward, many fellow trumpeters, Dom Dal Bello, etc. listened to them and critiqued them.

The result of this it the American Civil War Bugle Call Tapes for Non Buglers. I gave away 20 sets at Outpost 2000. We had a bully buy up here a couple of years ago, and over 2,000 sets have been sold in the last 5 years (and hundreds more copied with my permission). Still $4 tape (2 for infantry), $6 for the manual, $10 CD....available in Blue, Red, and Yellow (that's branch of service)...also Drum and Bugle, also Gilham's.....Holbrook's (for you Black Hawk War boys).....Scott's (Mex American War)....even have 1812 Duane's calls for light infantrymen. and The Hanoverian Hornsignalen from 1821.

                  So there's your shameless plug.

email me with your address and I'll ship 'em out to you.

                    Re: Bugle Calls

Your right the FMA is modern. Thanks for pointing that out. Thanks MR .Samp for your insight.I never thought about it like that. Its amazing that when the bullets were flying and smoke rising and with the the din of battle plus all that goes on in combat they were even able to hear a thing. I guess it comes down to being well trained ,drilled and drilled some more.So well that it is ingrained in your mind. Thanks again.I will get you out my email .Let me know what I owe you.

                      Re: Bugle Calls

Although you may not intend to attend the Into the Wilderness event April 30-May 2, 2004, you may wish to know that by subscription to the 7th Maine yahoogroup you could learn those bugle calls. The group site has the calls. We are building on past experience and using bugle calls to direct evolutions of the line just as we did at McDowell 2003. Sure saves a commander's voice and, better yet, gets the command to those who need to execute.

                        Re: Bugle Calls

Thanks Mr. Culberson for the info and yes I am attending ITW .I cant wait as it is going to be great.I will check that out. Anyhow I was wondering and this might be a stupid question but how much more were bugles used in the field as compared to voice commands.I assume that in camp it would mostly be by bugle or am I wrong.Would it depend on the situation, battle, number of men in the field, noise, landscape, etc.. I just was wondering at what point did voice cammands stop and bugle begin or was it mostly bugle? Must have been allot to remember.

                          Re: Bugle Calls

May I suggest purchasing George Rabbi's Book and CD, it is probably one of the better sources of Infantry Bugle Call available.
