Ran across the term "billy dux" in a personal letter from April 1866 today at work, and am interested as to if anyone is familiar with the term and its origins. It appears to have been a period term, the earliest instance of its use I could find being a comedic broadside in the 1830s. From what I can tell, it refers to a brief note or letter, but beyond that I'm at a loss. Any clues?
