  • What is a "billy dux"?

Ran across the term "billy dux" in a personal letter from April 1866 today at work, and am interested as to if anyone is familiar with the term and its origins. It appears to have been a period term, the earliest instance of its use I could find being a comedic broadside in the 1830s. From what I can tell, it refers to a brief note or letter, but beyond that I'm at a loss. Any clues?

Edit: By the way, mods feel free to push this to whatever location you feel is most fit.

Comic or phonetic spelling of "billet doux," maybe? Love letter?

"Billet doux": a short, sweet letter. A love letter. Back in the day before texting and e-mail, almost before the internal combustion engine, I received and sent a few...when postage was 4 cents and one put the stamp on upside-down to express affection!
