Robert,
Here is the site for the UP Heritage Steam program. http://www.up.com/aboutup/special_tr...am/index.shtml I don't see anything on their schedule and would find it interesting if they brought one of these as neither is a 19th century locomotive, both are 20th century. If may just be an excursion, but have not heard of them going across the Mississippi much. Interesting if it does happen. Keep me posted through PM.Timothy J. Koehn

Re: Steam train to Shiloh
The early 20th Century UP steam train is being used for this preliminary to the Blue Gray Alliance Shiloh. Cannons and other rolling stock will load in Omaha, Nebraska, while passengers board in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday morning Participants will arrive at the Shiloh site on Wednesday.
Like Matt's Paddlewheeler, this effort filled quickly and was not announced on public forums. It currently has a waiting list.

Can't really see much of the engine but someone familiar with UP's stock might recognize it. Mid 20th century maybe? (Just saw Terre clarified, early 20th century) There just aren't any 1860s trains still capable of running any significant distance that I know of.

Re: Steam train to Shiloh
Both of UP's remaining steam locomotives in excursion service are WW2-vintage. Their "Challenger" #3985 was delivered in 1943 and their "Northern" #844 in 1944. As "modern" locomotives they are not even remotely similar in size and appearance to 1860s locomotives.
I'd be thrilled to ride behind either of them, but I'd feel more comfortable wearing a snap-brim fedora and a 6-button double breasted suit instead of Civil War garb.

Re: Steam train to Shiloh
Well that's lovely Mr McKee. Do please send out a notice when you've made the connections with UP, sold your idea, and assembled several hundred folks with funds in hand and some proper timeframe vehicles (jeeps? tanks?) and I'll be quick to pull out those clothes too. My late 1930's square heeled Old Lady Comforts are much more to my liking when it comes to footwear.
For those who are concerned over the dichotomy brought on by the true age of the conveyances being used for the various transport efforts, they can rest easy that neither the Paddlewheeler nor the Train arrive at the reenactment site, and will not offend sensibilities of those who arrive in modern conveyance.Terre Hood Biederman

Re: Steam train to Shiloh
Jim, the UP will off load in the Memphis area--the various buses the Blue Gray Alliance is using to aid in shuttling the various 'related efforts' to their points of embarkation/disembarkation are getting quite a workout for this event, as we want all participants to ultimately end up with their own transport home in the various reenactor parking lots.
Robert, Col. Crowder is absolutely snowed under--if you wish, contact me directly at the email below. I'll answer what questions I can, and pass you on to the BGA's staff member in charge of the Shiloh Excursion Train for the rest. I think once you explain to him, he'll put you in touch with our UP contact. I'm just not at liberty to do so. I hope this means you are going to inquire about helping staff the train during the trip.
And while I had not thought of my hobby as being that of Organizing Trains, well, I guess that is one of them (though I'm a very very small cog in the wheel of the Shiloh excursion train). Like so many things, I certainly enjoyed organizing another train, once it was done. I'm also glad that one of those fellers in the picture below is taking charge of the next one, and my only task will be to see to it that my wagon gets there.

Re: Steam train to Shiloh
As UP fan (would love to see a Big Boy back running, but Challenger will do) I would love to see pictures of this. Some of us are in the real war and can't make the events, so pictures would be nice. Would love to be on either the CW or WWII type rides. Admired Paul's pictures for a few years.
For future reference, if anyone is looking for a period locomotive you may want to look at this link. http://www.leviathan63.com/ Maybe someone can work with Mr. Kloke and get a period train at an event. Y'all have fun.Timothy J. Koehn

Tim:
The Leviathan looks awesome! Same too for the two working reproduction steamers at Promontory, Utah (Golden Spike Historic Site).
I see that Kloke Locomotive works is in Elgin IL...practically my back yard. Hmmm...(The sound of rusty gears turning in my head).

Re: Steam train to Shiloh
Yes the FEF-3 class UP 844 was built in 1944 and is the only steam locomotive never to have been retired by a class 1 railroad. We run this engine all over the system often at speeds over 75 mph. This unit has been on my service unit several times including a couple years ago when the UP 844 teamed up with the SP 4449 (owned by the City of Portland) for a run to Seattle and back. Long story short I am trying to get in touch with who on the UP is coordinating this. I feel I may be able to lend a hand. Unfortunately the local management around here has no idea who I should call.Robert Johnson
