Can anyone direct me to online resources for documenting the service record of a CSA surgeon? Here is the doctor's record from the VMI archives:
John Cooke Grayson, Class of 1852 (graduate). Genealogy: Born January 1832 at "Salvington," Stafford County, Virginia. Father- Dr. Robert Osborne Grayson, born near Upperville, Loudoun County, Virginia. Mother- Sarah Mason Cooke (a widow of Mr. Selden); she was the granddaughter of George Mason, Virginia statesman and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights (1776), and was born at her grandfather's home, Gunston Hall, Fairfax County, VA. Education: Entered VMI on August 17, 1849 as a third classman (sophomore) and graduated July 4, 1852, standing 12th out of 24 graduates; subsequently received a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia (Richmond, VA). He practiced medicine in Washington DC until the beginning of the Civil War. Military Record: Surgeon, Confederate Army; likely spent war assigned to General Hospital in Farmville, VA. Post-war: Practiced medicine in Culpeper County, Virginia. He lived in Culpeper Co. at his home "Salubria," near Stevensburg, which he had inherited from his mother. Marriage: He married twice. 1st marriage: to F. Lena Pettus (widow of Mr. Walton), on June 30, 1868; the marriage took place in Farmville, Prince Edward County, VA. Issue from the first marriage- 1. John Cooke Grayson, Jr. (b. at "Salubria" Culpeper Co., on July 9, 1871; married Jennie R. Thornley in 1893). 2. Sarah Mason Grayson, died in infancy. 3. Cary Travers Grayson (b. at "Salubria" October 1877; Surgeon, U. S. Navy; Rear-Admiral; personal physician to President Woodrow Wilson). 2nd marriage: to Georgianna (Georgie) Taliaferro, in 1885. No issue from second marriage. Death: At his home in Culpeper County on Jun 4, 1894. Other: He was a cousin of Richard Osborne Grayson, Class of 1858.
