Re: New Pedersoli offerings
Hallo!
While "Pedersoli" appears to be receptive to tinkering and more 'fine tuning' the final designs...
They have run into a potential snag. The two prototypes at the Janaury Shot Show will/did not pass the N-SSA Small Arms Committee review as the dimensions were too far off from the orignals to pass.
IMHO, this raises several questions. In the past, and in the old Val Forgett/Navy Arms era, commercial offerings were often give a blind eye nod or pass over the "standards" compared to what a private custom-builder had to meet.
This secret Double Standard was a sore point for many lads (myself included), and in the more Recent Era was said to have been done away with.
So, we will need to see what Pedersoli does- retool and correct the historical issues for N-SSA approval, or by-pass the N-SSA's SAC and/or just go into production based upon the prototype samples as many/most all reenactors are either ignorant/unknowledgeable or do not care.
We shall see if revised prototype samples show up for the N-SSA's Spring Nationals.

Re: New Pedersoli offerings
Hallo!
IMHO, a hard question to answer... and perhaps best answered by the individual owner/shooter.
But we are still talking apples and oranges. Ideally, in theory, the N-SSA type competitve shooter is not as concerened about the "authenticity" of the gun as he is abouts ability to consistently shoot "center." Ideally, in theory, the reenactor is not as converned about the "accurary" of the gun as he is its authenticity.
That is why an N-SSA member keen on competition and winning, may be willing to spend say $1500 or $2000 on a custom-built RM or R even though it may not have the three (NUG) broad rifling grooves but instead have modern narrow 6-7 micro-groove rifling with a a different twist rate than orginals had.
IMHO, what Pederoli is trying to do, is appeal to that N-SSA competitor, and throw a minor bone to the reenactor by making a few improvements to the bogus Italian reproduction "farbery" posing as firearms for the more authentica-minded CW community. That appeal being, to the competitive shooter, he can buy say a M1861 with a match grade 'competition' barrel out of the box for say $1100 or $1200 rather than contract and wait for a $1500 or $2000 cusotm-built.
A side discussion also not really relevent to "reenacting," was that in ye Olde Daze, lads would take an original, and have a barrel maker make a repalcement barrel, and shot that in competition. But, now, if one is paying $1500-2,000 for an original and than adding a replacement barrel for say $350 or $400 it is "pricey." Or, a similar thing can be done for the Italian repro's although a bit more complicated as the barrels do not match originals and the different Italian makers have changed their barrels over time so that no are "universals" even within the same brand.
A hard part is that, for the most part, most guns can shoot better than the shooter shooting them. So, even an out-of-the-box AS or EA RM or R can "out shoot' many an owner. The problem is that the Italians run poor Quality Control, and bore size, and rifling and bore finishing quality can really vary.
I think Pederoli is trying to change that and appeal to a "mid range" competitor. But, reenactors used to spending $600-$700 are balking at the prices that will double pretty soon. (Especially when paying for a match grade barerl they will likely ever use or need...)
Others' mleage will vary...

Pedersoli
Pedersoli at last appears to have photos of their revised CW musket offerings on their website. I accessed the Enfield off a thread in the N-SSA bulletin board. Am not shilling these; don't have and don't intend to have a replica shoulder arm. Merely FYI.David Fox

Re: Pedersoli
There are five pics, scroll down on the left.
Davide Pedersoli sells and produces reproductions of Muzzle Loading Rifles such as Enfield 3 band P1853 Rifle of the product line Enfield
Almost forgot, pics of the 61 Springfield and Richmond are up also.
My own personal opinion, for a reenactor, a closer resemblance on the Enfield can be had by defarbing an Armi sport, for a lot less money. For NSSA shooters, well there are no comments posted. 1200.00 is getting in to the price range of a custom rifle.
I read somewhere, perhaps on this board, that Armi Sport was looking in to upgrading the Enfield. Anyone else have info on this?Last edited by GPM; 07-02-2012, 06:40 AM.Greg Myers
