  • program for noncommissioned officers

The Civil War Living History Institute will be offering a two weekend program this year devoted to helping folks become more plausible/effective Civil War noncommissioned officers. The first weekend is July 30-Aug. 1, at Fort Washington on the Potomac, southeast of Washington. The second weekend is TBA, probably in the fall. The Fort Washington weekend will be classroom and some drill; the fall weekend will be field exercises to implement what's been learned.

We'll post details pretty soon. This is a preliminary notice so folks who are interested can match the date up against their own plans for the summer, and so anyone who might even be remotely interested can send me an email at wjwatson@ptdprolog.net to get on the notification list.

This isn't an "event," since there weren't schools for noncommissioned officers 1861-65 in the same sense we have such schools now. What it amounts to is preparation outside the event framework that will lead to a better impression, more enjoyment, etc. It will be carried out in 186x fashion, however, with Fort Washington serving as the backdrop and with a working infantry company "operating" the fort as part of that context.

Who is it for? Anybody interested in learning about what noncommissioned officers were actually expected to do to make their companies and their regiments function properly in camp and in the face of the enemy. Prequisite: folks should know their basics -- school of the soldier, school of the company -- from a rank and file perspective. We'll take it from there.

I went through the CWLHI staff college over the last couple of years. It changed my perspective on what we do as living historians, for the better I believe. I look forward to being part of the effort to expand this kind of opportunity, and encourage folks to take a shot at this. It's a lot of fun and the fort itself is a jewel, with tremendous views of the river.

Anyway, more details soon, and send me a post if you're remotely interested.

    Thanks
