Gents,
Many of us are familiar with the wrecks of the Steamboats Arabia and Bertrand and the wonderful collections that they provide to give us a glimpse of the material culture of the 1850s and 1860s. Much more obscure is the Hoff Store, a San Francisco General Store, which was burned in one of the San Fancisco fires of the 1850s. What made this unique was that the Hoff Store was built on a pier and when the pier collapsed due to the fire the stores contents fell into the water and mud which helped to preserve its contents. The archeological report can be found at http://www.sha.org/bottle/pdffiles/hoffstore.pdf
Enjoy!
