        Re: New Magazine

Please allow me to bump this thread...

The next few issues of the Citizens and Soldiers Digest will present three of our published articles on 19th century military (US & CS) and civlian leather types, dyeing, finishing, tanneries, etc. Good overviews of the origins, tanning and use of various leathers used in military accoutrements and horse equipments including leather definitions. One printed in each issue. The articles were originally written years ago and published in several different magazines over the years including the Journal of the Company of Military Historians. For those that might have missed them, here again is a good opportunity to catch them in a complete series.

For the "finely tuned" 19th century accoutrement nerd, you might be interested to know that we have just finished an article on buff leather (white and black then brown), its military applications and its unique if not mysterious origins and history. It is slated to be published soon in the Journal then elsewhere. And NO....buff leather did not come from Buffalos! But, it sometimes drew flies!!

We hope many of you will enjoy them.

OH! Almost forgot! I have an heretofore unpublished piece also in the Dec/Jan issue (Connie tells me) about the recent discovery of what may well be a Richmond Arsenal Jenifer saddle once owned by Robert E Lee. Its evidence is circumstantial and intriguing but ...is it really a "new" R.E. Lee artifact? ....you get to make the call!

I second, this is definitely a good read.
