    Jim,
Same one Paul was referring to. Too many interuptions going on yesterday when I looked at the photo. Looking at it again on the higher resolution photo, it does look like a regular issue fatigue jacket. Can see now where it is folded back a little in his lap. When I first looked at it, I thought I saw one of those shortened fatigue jackets. I have an old jacket that I intend to shorten some time.

The gents in the Engineer Battalion are interesting in the variety of headgear and coats they have. Lots of non-issue hats, many very worn. I am curious if the amount of manual labor an engineer batt'n was required to do resulted in more lattitude when it came to uniforms/appearance.

Regarding the pic of the company in frocks: Notice the dapper orderly sergeant! Looks like an officer-grade chapeau and private purchase sack coat. His rank insignia consists only of the lozenge (diamond-shaped thingamabobby), no chevrons. It is also intersting that there is also a wide variety of hats. Not as much lattitude as we see with the engineers, but you do see issue hats, forage caps, and civilian hats.
