  • Federal Regimental Flags, State/Blue

I have be able to find the size of the overall flag (6’x6’), materials (silk, tassels, fringe, pole length), etc. for the state regimental flag for the 33rd Wisconsin.

Question, is there a source (web hopefully) with dimensions, sizes, colors etc for the stars, eagle, ribbon at bottom, letters, etc for the individual regiment. Do have a picture of the Original Flag (not sure of date of issuance), so I know what it looks like, but looking for dimensions as to the sizing, colors, location, etc., so as to fit on the 6'x6' flag. Been inquirying to various sources, but no luck yet.

Also, per US Army regs, there is to be on the 'other side (reverse?)' the 'arms of the United States'. For the 1862/65 time frame what might this look like and again dimensions. This to fit on the 6'x6' flag.

    Thanks

Jim, I'd contact Scott Cross here on the AC in regards to Wisconsin ACW material culture. I cannot think of a better/more knowledgeable source.

Wisconsin's Civil War flags are in the collection of the Wisconsin Veteran's Museum. Preserved examples are shown on the website below, the 33rd is not among those that have been preserved, to my knowledge. An inquiry to the museum may give you more information about the flag.

Thanks. I do have a picture of the flag, it has not been restored. Can't remember where I got the photo right now.

This is quite a process. The standard issue Regimental Flags that came from different depots and different contractors within have very distinct differences, but are so alike among themselves that it is thought that stencils of some sort were used in mapping them on to the silk. The best thing you can do is try to identify which depot and contractor the Regimental came from and find another original from the same and reproduce that. It will be the closest thing to the actual 33rd WI flag you will get and you can be very confident that it is correct. Knowing what Depot it came from will also tell you what the cords and tassels looked like as well as the flag poles. Good luck and I agree Scott should be your first contact.
