  • Ground Cloths

I know this might be a some what of a dumb question but I have had a hard time finding images of soldiers wearing ground cloths or images of ground cloths so what my point is do we as reenactors over use ground cloths and I was also wondering if they would have had any designs on them or such?

    Re: Ground Cloths

Do you mean wearing a gum blanket or poncho as rain gear?

      Re: Ground Cloths

I have seen gum blankets on federals but I am referring to the plain black ground cloths we use to today most of the research I have been doing has put it as ground cloths had many different designs on them.

Zach, when you state "designs" do you mean Floor Cloths?

          Re: Ground Cloths

          Zack,
I think you actually asked several questions.
1: Did soldiers carry floor cloths with designs?
2: how did soldiers carry floor/ground cloths?
3: Do reenactors overuse waterproof covers other than federal issue rubberized or painted cloth?
          Check out this thread. http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...risoner-groups
You be your own judge if you see any "painted cloth."
Also, check your sources to reference of carrying two blankets and mention of one being waterproof or weatherproof etc.
I will look when I get a chance but I think I remember reading of soldiers looting houses in Fredericksburg and pulling floor cloths off the floor.
Neat subject! Hopefully someone will chime in with an image of a soldier known to be carrying a designer floor cloth.
