  • Commutation Jackets

    Gentlemen:

Can anyone point me in the direction of any good sources on the early commutation jackets of the Army of Northern Virginia? I've been trying to find some pictures or original examples, yet have had no luck. I understand the commutation system; I just don't know how they would have looked. Thanks.

    -Matt Forrest

P.S. I know that there were different types, so any and all states, localities, and such are acceptable.

You can find information on communtation jackets in Les Jensen's book "Johnny Reb the Uniform of the Confederate Army, 1861-1865".

Thanks for that lead, I went and got that book from my local library and that has helped us come up with more questions as we try to improve the accuracy of our group.

Nothing like answering questions with more questions to help get the juices flowing.

Don't forget Ross Kimmel's article on Maryland Confederate enlisted men's
uniforms, also published by the CMH.
