  • western hard bread manufactioners.

    Hello,
Would anyone happen to know of any federal bakeries West of the Mississippi that was producing hard bread in 1861? Or possibly some place closer besides Brooklyn or Boston?

Erik, Orrin Kendall of Chicago had a contract for hard bread. Do a search on GoogleBooks for "Orrin Kendall". This should get you started. There is a Kendall Brothers cracker box that was up for auction via Heritage Auctions.

That orginal on Heritage Auctions is confusing. The bakery is listed at Washington & Dearborn in Chicago. I found a coin with the address listed as Cor. Washinton & Dearborn Sts. Can't find a Powers st. in Chicago at the time.

          Eric,
In one of the many files I have saved from Fold3, I saved several suppliers of what may or may not be Pilot Bread. I say this because the shipping invoices only state that it is Hard Bread and was shipped by the barrel. This was in late 61' if I remember correctly. Anyhow I will look it up and PM you when I find it. BTW it was also a Western supplier.
