Hello Authentic-Campaigner Community,
Over the years I have helped support Fort Donelson in a number of ways. One way that I have helped Fort Donelson is the Traveling Trunk Program. The traveling trunks program sends out trunks that are filled with soldier/civilian/sailor related items, along with books, and lesson plans to schools that help to teach the story of Fort Donelson. Schools may request the trunks and are shipped to the school for a period of time and then must be sent back to the park. Over the years a few items have come up missing and the park is replacing those items.
What I have done in the past was to donate some of my old gear that is no longer serviceable or I have out grown. I also wrote the name of my ancestor and the unit some where on the article. For example Melville V. Cherry 49th TENN Co G on a bible, Andrew Cherry 14th TENN Co G on a painted cloth. If you have some old gear that may have a hole, wore out, or no longer needed, could you donate it to the park?
They are just really in need of personal items: cups, knives/forks/spoon sets, ration bags, haversacks, socks (only have two or three pair), old kepis or slouch hats, shirts, playing cards or dice, stationery/pencils, etc. They mostly have the uniforms /brogans /leather gear. If you have other items send it in.
Susan Hawkins is the contact person at the park for the trunk program.
