  • Any interest in a western "regional" group?

By western, I mean true western US, like the rocky mountain region.

I was perusing through some of the old threads on lack of overall CW events out here and how any fellow authentics are spread all through these western states, and I got the idea of maybe there would be enough interest out here to form a "regional" group?
    What I'm thinking is this-

Form a loosely organized group of us westerners in order to-
    1. Muster a few times a year to get together, camp and drill to build and maintain basic field craft skills and overall drilling capabilities. With this, I was thinking maybe muster and drill a couple times a year during the good weather months, rotate through the states of the various members or agree on a central location. It wouldn't be too many times a year considering gas costs; just enough for us to get our CW fix and to drill.
    2. Support each other if there are any worthwhile and unique events going on in our states.
    3. Form a carpool group that can help cover gas costs in order to head out East for quality EBUFU and adjunct events for those of us who want to go to the same events (I don't know about you guys but I'm tired of footing the gas bill for all by myself. Plus driving through Wyoming and Nebraska is so boring by myself.)

I'm just interested in something like this and wondering if there's enough interest among my fellow westerners.

        Hello!

I am one of a few POCs for THEM (WA, OR, ID, BC). Here are our goals:

        1. To plan and promote smaller authentic "EBUFU" style events.
        2. To help improve mainstream events by grass roots living history and "carpe eventum" activities.
        3. To organize and mobilize local campaigner/authentic/progressive Civil War reenactors into a cooperative regional effort.
        4. To keep the bagpipers out!

They neatly align with most of yours, though we insist on the strictest adherence to #4...

The greatest thing we contend with in the West is geographical proximity. Most people stay within the confines of major arteries and river valleys that connect major population centers. For the NW that means The Pacific Ocean to the West, Eugene Oregon to the South, Vancouver/Victoria BC to the North, and the Rockies to the East (even the Cascades really). And, figure that most Western states can swallow entire Eastern states whole with room to spare - which adds considerable driving time. Although it is fun to follow the footsteps of Lewis and Clark by traversing the mountains and plains with an Audio book, climate controlled interior, and a few cup holders...

Since driving times are long, and driving costs are high, flying starts to become an attractive option. But unless you can snag an uber cheap flight, sometimes it seems better to just spend a little more and go East to the larger events and the original ground.

Doug Cooper has a great core group in Idaho that may be closest to you for a Westward carpool. THEM does an annual event on private land where we dig earthworks and load with ramrods during our battles.

A west coast event would be fun, but it is a matter of where...
