Stitched Cotton Hat

I am doing some research for a museum display and wanted to know how common hats such as the stitched cotton beehive variation given to Robert E. Lee featured in EoG were. Does anyone know of someone capable of producing such a hat now? I look forward to hearing everyones insight.

Hi Joe, if I remember correctly, Ross Lamoreaux makes, or has made them in the past. The plans for making them can be found in the Workman's Guide if you care to try your hand at making one.

They were a fashionable sporting hat seen in fashion plates. The sutler that can't be named made one recently with a matching sporting sack suit.

Tyler, I'm sure you didn't mean this book: http://www.amazon.com/Workmans-Guide.../dp/B0029YHAXA and when I looked through the Workwoman's Guide from 1840, it had nothing like the hat in question. Is the Workman's guide a different one?

And David, could you point me to some of these fashion plates? Tried looking for civilian references to these cloth hats and could not turn up much that pre-dated or was during the war. Perhaps I am just looking in the wrong place(s)?

Hi Adam, sorry for the late reply, I honestly kept forgetting to get back to you with an answer. The hat in question is in fact not the same in the Workman’s Guide. The one that I thought it was on plate 19 figure 31. The instructions can be found on page 154. Follow the links to both pages.

He that shall not be named produces one that is available through the Regimental Quartermaster "Campaigner" section of their website. I took a look at one at Winter Quarters '65. It appeared to be well constructed.
