  • Buyer Beware

I really wasn’t sure where to post this one. Moderator, feel free to move as you feel is appropriate.

In my never-ending quest to learn all things Tennessean, I came across a book called “Also for Glory Muster: The Story of the Pettigrew Trimble Charge at Gettysburg” by Don Ernsberger. A copy of page 326 is attached, with a picture captioned, “Company E 14th Tennessee.”

Also attached is a copy of my old unit taken in the late 90s in San Jose, CA (I’d love to tell you which one is me, but I’m not in it). Either these are the best reenactors ever, or something is wrong.

Admittedly, I’m looking at an incomplete copy in Google books, and I can’t find the photo credit for this picture at the end. I’m hoping someone with ready access to a complete copy of this book can tell me if there is a photo credit for this picture and, if so, what it reads.

Yeah, that doesn't look quite right to me. Perhaps you can contact the author for the information.

Yeeeeah... doesn't look right. While it is a great image, they look too "reenactor" at close inspection. REALLY close inspection. Congrats on the time machine, you are doing something right! ;)

        Re: Buyer Beware

A photographer who knew what he was doing really helped. Here's the guy that took it:

If you go to the page for his portfolio book (http://collodion-artist.com/william-...ortfolio-book/), there's a picture of a burial party. Many of the same guys as in the first picture are in it. The guy standing closest to the camera in the burial party shot is one of the guys leaning against the wheel of the artillery piece. The guy standing further back is the officer in the group shot.

Unfortunately, despite efforts on the photographer's part to put clues in the picture that it is not original, several of his pictures have been passed off as originals. I even know one guy who went to a gun show and found a picture of himself being passed as an original.

I have a few of Will Dunniway's myself, and at some point he started scratching his name on the back of his ferrotypes to discourage fraudulent sales.

            Re: Buyer Beware

Perhaps the author is unaware that the image is of a reenacting group? If you do not have the complete book, then it is difficult to figure out what is going on.
