Re: What can you make with?

Ok, let's pose a few questions back so things can be placed properly.

Are these rations for a formal camp or garrison situation where these supplies are readily available or are we on campaign and have to wait for supply wagons which may or may not show by the time we need to sit down to mess? Are there any items that might get brought in that were purloined from outside the garrison or while on campaign that need to be cooked up? [Eyeballing that stolen pig and bartered produce over yonder.] What year of the war do you want to deal with AND what theater or region do you wish this question to be set in? Finally, are we cooking for a mere mess or an entire regiment?

Being given the ideal amount of rations, per the book, is one thing. However, the variables of reality always do intrude and must be reckoned in as well.

Given that a few officers experimented and came up with 20+ dishes using just hard tack and salt pork, I couldn't hazard a guess at how many different things you could make with the ingrediants you listed.

Try doing a search and you'll find a number of useful threads regarding cooking/eating in the field and in garrison.
