  • Obituary for Marsh Wheeling

With the closure in October 2015 of the National Cigar Co., the famous Marsh Wheeling line of cigars is dead.

Much beloved by reenactors because they are period-correct (albeit now machine-made), and affordable, Marsh Wheeling stogies were featured in period films like Glory or pretty much any Clint Eastwood western.

Created in the 1840s in Wheeling, WV (then VA) by Mifflin Marsh & Son, the "Stogie" was named after the Conestoga wagons headed west on the National Road. The Stogie exploded in popularity, and the brand name soon became a generic term for all cigars, especially long, thin ones. However, in the late 20th century production declined precipitously. In 1988, the company was bought by the National Cigar Co. In 2001, the National Cigar Co. closed the Wheeling factory and moved production to its factory in Frankfort, IN. Having already survived a few scares it was shutting down in the past ten years, the National Cigar Co. finally closed its doors late last year, principally citing federal taxes on tobacco as the reason for closure.

Internet cigar venders are already out of stock, and listing it as discontinued. It will not be long before battlefield sutlers also run out. This will also complicate matters for tinsmiths who have created segar tins specially designed to fit Marsh Wheeling stogies. There are not many other cigars that share the stogie's unique 7x34 shape.

This also essentially completes the collapse of the once-vibrant domestic cigar production in the United States, as there are no other domestic operations that could conceivably take over. We can always hope that some entrepreneur will take a risk to bring back the venerable Marsh Wheeling, but as things now stand, husband any you currently have, for they will likely be your last.

    Re: Obituary for Marsh Wheeling

This afternoon I checked with National Cigar.com, a website showing Marsh Wheeling cigars: http://nationalcigar.com/index.php?m...roducts_id=935 The Woman I spoke to at 800-269-1760, told me that someone had bought Marsh Wheeling, she thought in 2017, and was going to be bringing these Cigars out to the market again. "Supposedly" they were supposed to be out in October of 2017, but they are not yet available.

Maybe someone can do some additional research on this to see if/when these Cigars will be available again in the future.

I contacted the Topper Cigar Company, http://toppercigars.com/ , as I'd heard they had acquired Marsh Wheeling cigars. I received a reply back from Chris Topper today stating that Topper had not acquired Marsh Wheeling, but that Topper will be the nationwide distributor for Marsh Wheeling when these cigars do come back to the marketplace. Topper expects to start shipping Marsh Wheelings toward the end of the First Quarter.

      Let's see what happens.

I guess those two boxes of Marsh Wheelings I have leftover in my sutler stock are gold right now.

Is that a price for them, or will you take silver?

Joking, but it is pretty much like that now.

Joe, if you've had those as long as I think you have, then you'd better toss them in a humidor or it's more like "gold dust" that you'll have, ha.

              Hallo!

For many years, while guiding tours of 18th century Wheeling. I parked in their parking lot.

              They were a landmark!

                Re: Obituary for Marsh Wheeling

I just got off the phone with Topper Cigars (800-966-8677) to follow up on my earlier inquires in to the Marsh Wheelings coming back on the market. I was told that it looks like they will be to the Master Distributor sometime in October. At that point they will start filtering out to retailers. Packaging will be 50 to the box as before, and also 5 packs. The Manufacturer (not Topper as I understand it) bought the Machinery, and is going to the same sources for the Tobacco as was used before, so "supposedly" we will not notice a difference between the old and new production.

Alot of the delays with bringing the Marsh Wheelings back have been with the various Government Regulations that have to be met. It's not as easy as just starting production again, as this is a "New Company" now that has to go through all the steps.

Marsh Wheelings are back in production as of October 19th, per the Topper Cigar Facebook page. I was notified by an email from Chris Topper yesterday that Marsh Wheelings will start shipping the end of this month/first week of December.

Link to the Topper Cigar Facebook page about Marsh Wheeling cigars being back in production:

Page from a Cigar Industry/Fan website mentioning the same information about Marsh Wheelings being back in production:

Those interested should be watching for these cigars to start showing up at Retail almost any time now!

                    Re: Obituary for Marsh Wheeling

Thompson Cigar has Marsh Wheelings on their website currently. It shows them "back ordered" until 12-6-2018:

(this basically matches what I was told by Chris Topper from Topper Cigars about when Marsh Wheelings will start shipping again)

                      Re: Obituary for Marsh Wheeling

I just received a box of the "new production" Marsh Wheeling cigars. I ordered them through National Cigar Store: http://www.nationalcigar.com/ I haven't tried one yet, but they look the same as the "old production" other than being about a half an inch shorter

New Box is on the left and my Old Box is on the right in the picture (hopefully I attached the photo correctly) Old Production is behind the New Production on the two Cigars lying in front of the boxes
