  • patch for Confederate stretcher bearer

I read in Rebel Watchdog that Jackson wanted the stretcher bearers to have a special patch designating their role in the army. It was to help distinguish them from a soldier who was deserting or shirking from duty. Was there ever a patch and if so, what did it look like?

I'm thinking it had to be more than a yellow ribbon tied around the arm to indicate hospital orderly/steward/nurse.

Re: patch for Confederate stretcher bearer

I believe the Confederate Army established some sort of (semi-)formal ambulance corps at some point during the war, but I don't know exactly when. Below is an armband they wore. But again, I'm not sure how prevalent or widespread this corps was or whether the armband was commonly worn...

Thanks Dave. The order would have applied to Jackson's Corps and was issued when he was in the valley.

BTW, do you belong to the SFCWRT?
