Just curious as to how many of you have period hairstyles. Do you keep it all year round, grow it in the spring, style it just for events? I grow my hair each spring so that its ready for the summer months. What about you?

Re: Period Hairstyles
Hallo Kameraden!
"Just curious as to how many of you have period hairstyles."
I am not so sure this is an appropriate question for the AC Forum, as with a title page of "Authentic Campaigner, a Website for the Authentic Civil War Living Historian" the correct answer would be "everyone."
However, I will temporarily leave this up in the SINKS as "Do you keep it all year round, grow it in the spring, style it just for events? may warrant a brief discussion albeit a "modern one."

Re: Period Hairstyles
In the real world, I usually try to keep my hair pretty short (buzzed on the sides, longer on top) but for authentic events, I grow it out as much as I can.
The hair length in my profile picture is usually how I grow it out for events.
I would like to grow it longer, but my hair is thin and slow growing and it won't allow me to get too crazy ;-)

Re: Period Hairstyles
I ususally wear my hair in a period style everyday, which gets me a lot of comments but the feeling that I'm doing something right. Right now my hair is probably three inches or more in length pretty much all around. I had it cut shorter, about an inch in length, but I let it grow out over the past few months. My hair is naturally very curly but when I comb it out I can do anything with it. Currently it is parted on both sides, with the hair on the top sides and sides of my head pulled down over my ears. My hair is long enough to create a flip above my ears. The top middle section is pulled forward and combed straight up, which managed to flip or curl every time, and I ususally comb it up and to the side. The back is combed down and it's so long now that the flip or curl on the side of my head continues all the way around the back and to the other side.
Personally, I like it very much and I am definitely keeping it this year, although I may get it trimmed at times. I think by soldier's standards my hair is probably "long" already.
Oh, and if you want some hair care tips...rinse your hair with water but don't use soap a while before an event. I go for a week or longer depending on the impression. You'll have some naturally oily hair, easy to shape, and you will also appreciate that grungy feeling just a little more.

Re: Period Hairstyles
From a girl's point of view ----
I have waist-length straight hippie hair, so I guess you could say I have period hair all the time. I generally do period styles just for events, since the Granny Clampett look isn't too fashionable for modern everyday wear, but I have been known to "test-drive" period styles in the general public.
And Mister... well, he just doesn't have much hair... ;)

Re: Period Hairstyles
After finally getting to the point last winter where I could no longer hold my arms up long enought to put up my long hair, I whacked off it to shoulder length. Now my center parted hair is simply pulled back and rolled over a 'rat' made from my own hair for events., then covered with a period net and bonnet.
Prior to that, I had a fine "granny clampett" look going though, pretty much all the time, much to the dismay of Dear Mother, past 80 and still a fashionable bleached blonde who says she is not old enough to have a daughter that looks this old....Terre Hood Biederman
Yassir, I used to be Mrs. Lawson. I still run period dyepots, knit stuff, and cause trouble.

Re: Period Hairstyles
I typically have a "Beatlesesque" bowl-cut parted on the left. I modify it for re-enactments by combing it back into a greasy "John Imboden" style, which remains fast under my mechanic's cap or forage cap.

Re: Period Hairstyles
Gentlemen & Ladies,
The more period images you look at -- particularly soldier CdVs -- it becomes apparent that a major element is the 'oiled' or 'slick' look -- whether brought about by a product (such as pomade or hair oil) or not. So its not just the style (which I maintain throughout the year) but also the texture, that has to be worked on. Also no @*%# clippers, just scissors.
