Just inquiring as to whether anyone might have any anecdotal information regarding the 17th Iowa Infantry. I recently discovered that I am a direct descendant of Pvt. John L. Douglass Co . C 17th Iowa Infantry U.S. This is exciting news to me because my primary impressions are Confederate. Me being the Southern boy I am always said I would like to do a good Mid-western Federal impression. My Maternal Granfather's people are from Iowa and Illinois and the ancestor was found tracing this lineage. I found a brief unit history online as well as an "index" of Iowa troops on Fold3. I was disappointed to find that Iowa is one of the states without a large information pool on Fold3, unless I'm not looking in the right spot. Just thought there might be some known written histories, i.e biographies, diaries, etc. that might contain a more thorough history of the regiment. Thanks!

    Re: 17th Iowa

Here's a link to a transcription of the appropriate volume of the Roster and Record of Iowa Troops in the Rebellion, Volume 3. This is the state-published history and rosters of the various regiments from Iowa. The history is pretty standard, but they vary depending upon the writer and the information available at the time.

Google Books has the reports of the Adjutant General of the state available for further information. Best of luck in your search.
