    random amateurs doing archaeological work?

Guess that is the difference between digging an area dig and focusing on finding artifacts... in a place that properly only got 150-200 years of history.(and most of is as a hunting area)
And when we here in Denmark do a dig in a city with 1000+ years of history... and are looking for Stratigraphy in 2+ meters of cultural layers.

And I guess that it is in the end a matter of money?

I participated in something like that in undergrad (focused more on colonial Jamestown), but the archaeology professors were carefully babysitting the public visitors. If you can find the trash pits, you can find archaeological gold.

“They can try their hand at metal detecting survey, and excavating the hits, or assisting with excavating our open 1x2 meter test unit, which has some interesting features in it.”
It sounds like they have a very small area set aside for visitors, under professional supervision and probably far away from any archaeological specimens. That actually sounds fun, and would be a great way for the park to attract visitors.
