(Photo courtesy of AHC) They lived in a "between" space. 40 free blacks lived in Atlanta during the Civil War, under challenging circumstances. One, Solomon Luckie, worked as a barber not far from CNN and the old Journal-Constitution building. He was killed when a Union artillery shell hit a lamppost. That artifact is moving from Underground Atlanta to the Atlanta History.
