  • 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg

A good article to mark this Independence week!

More than a century and a half later, the nation they fought and died for remains, still imperfect, but still here.

    Hallo!

As part of the NPS's "deforestation" efforts, the overgrown tree line/woods in front of the 1st Minn. was cleared back to its 1863 appearance so now the 1st's view of the Confederate advance is more like they saw it.

        Re: 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg

        Hallo!

I lost track (I have been to G-burg about 50 times over the years).

I am going to say it has been a while. My last trip was April 2009 and it was open.

While there are opponents of the work, for me personally I favor "remaking" things to look like 1863. But it is not always great. The woods directly behind where the 1st Minn. was that day was cleared eliminating the trees/wood section not there. But it opened up a view of the modern buildings' backsides and lots along the road. While neither is Period, I do better with the trees than the modern development.
