I'm sure some killjoy will show up to prove this never happened and was made up in 1879 but in the meantime this is one of my favorite quotes - from LEE'S LIEUTENANTS, Jubal Early in church early 65:
The minister had closed his book and had launched on his peroration: "Suppose, my Christian friends, that those who have laid for centuries in their graves should arise now and come forth from their quiet resting places; and marching in their white shrouds should pass before this congregation, by thousands and tens of thousands, what would be the result?"
"Ah," said Early in a stage whisper to the officer next him, "I'd conscript every damned one of them."
