  • Third Mississippi Camp of Instruction Handbook

    Hello,

I am looking to add research and reference materials to my personal library of books, and I was recently informed of two books that I have yet to find, the Third Mississippi Camp of Instruction Handbook, and the Hardcracker Handbook. I realize that these texts are a bit dated, but I think they may be beneficial to assisting with my research. My question is, does anyone here have a copy they would sell, or does anyone know where I can find a copy of either of these books? I'm posting this in the Sinks because I am unsure of the exact forum it belongs in. Thank you all!

I've also been looking for a looooong time. It was easier to obtain a complete set of The Watchdog newsletters.

Considering it's a compiled document published in the late 1990's, you're going to have a hard time finding too many reenactors here who have even heard of the Third Mississippi handbook you're mentioning. I have one. Ain't selling. Don't ask. I still refer to it.

Well that's unfortunate news, I was hoping to find a copy.

For the 3rd MS Handbook you need to contact Tom Czekanski who put it together. He works at the WWII Museum in New Orleans. If there is anything in particular you are looking for, I can look in mine for you. I believe I have both but will not be parting with them.

I contacted Mr. Czekanski on Facebook, and he informed me it was no longer possible to buy a copy of the handbook due to the fact that the articles contained within were copyrighted, and thus the handbook created issues of copyright infringement. So I suppose my question has been answered.

Both the Hardcracker Hand book and 3rd Mississippi Handbooks are out of print and virtually unavailable for just that reason... they are compilations of articles from various sources just stacked together and copied. I have both, and they're great references. Info is a little dated now, but the insight and context in many of the articles are well worthwhile. In the same manner, I've collected articles and web links over the years, and saved them to a flash drive for reference, everything from the old Betty Barfield list server to the old EZBoard forums, and I find myself going back to them time and again... probably one of the better collections of the Charles Heath and Hank Trent musings. If for nothing else it's an occasional walk down memory lane with old pards...

And I have pretty much all of the old Watchdogs as well...

The key is to figure out what you interested in researching, and keep meticulous records and notes. Your personal notes are usually within the copyright rules, but you can get into trouble when you carelessly share, or try to sell.
