Black powder problem

Hi, Ran into a slight problem with some black powder and wanted to ask if anyone else has ever encountered this. I have been shooting muskets for 49 years now and this was a first for me. Made some blank cartridges for an event and had a couple that didn't go off and some that didn't go off that well. Tearing open a few cartridges, the powder seemed to be a mix of FFG and FFFG. The grains varied noticeably in size and were not consistent. The powder was GOEX and the can is marked FFFG which is what I usually use. Anybody ever have this happen? Is this some kind of factory mix up or screening over run at Goex? Thank you.

I have used FF and FFF and never had a problem with ignition. Don't think that is your problem. I have tried to use the Goex reenactor power in the gray can and had to throw it away. I think it is swept up off the floor at the end of the day and is made up of all sizes of grains. I wonder if they got the cans mixed up at the factory.

I have to agree with Jim, I've not had an issue with FFg or FFFg. My Sharps are particular about caps, and neither they nor my muskets like the crappy CCI Reenactor caps, but as long as I'm using good caps, not an issue.

At the last event I was at, some of the guys were getting sub-standard "bangs" using the reenactor powder. They commented that it's luck of the draw with those cartridges. I'm betting that the cans got mixed.

We've used reenactor powder for years with no problems. We have had problems with caps. What are you using? We buy the German brand four wings by the 1000.
