Correcting my earlier post, the 1st SC alluded to above appears from further reading to be either the 1st SC (Regular) Infantry [THird Artillery] or the 1st Artillery, NOT the 1st SC (Charleston) Bttn.

I made contact with the Connecticut Governor's office and they were very friendly, according to one of the assistants, the flag could be among the "Hall of Flags" at the Governor's Mansion, she also stated that there was a number of captured Confed flags in the hall. I sent a email to the Office of Legislative Management about this.

She was worried that I was trying to reposses the flag, but I assured her that I had a purely historical interest in the flag. Although having it on loan at the SC Relic Room would be nice :)! All I want is a picture and location. The Governor's Mansion probably has other Morris Island captures as well!

I got the same letter from Dean Nelson today through a mutal friend. Funny how these sources are the same ;-). But any way that is what he knows and if there is anyone in CT who would know, It is him.

On a related front. The CT historical society has in its collection one of the U.S. Treasury Guard flags form Lincon's box at Ford's Theater the night he got "whacked". Link is www.chs.org/cws.htm I belive.

The interesting part about that story is how this rather important artifact went "underground" for a period of time and then was found in a shoebox in thier collection. Another couple of years in that shoebox, that relic would have been beyond conservation.

I hope that this flag is found.

In the Field, Morris Island, S. C., August 26, 1863.
His Excellency the Governor of Connecticut:
SIR: I have the honor to forward herewith a rebel flag captured by a soldier of the Sixth Connecticut Volunteers, in the action of July 10, 1863, on Morris Island, with a copy of the memorandum by the late Colonel Chatfield, of that regiment, giving the name of the captor.
It is a source of peculiar satisfaction to me to be able to send this material trophy, slight as it is, of the valor and good conduct of the soldiers of your State who are serving in this department, and who, under the late lamented Colonel Chatfield and Lieutenant-Colonel Rodman, of the Seventh Regiment, have borne so prominent and distinguished a part in our recent operations.

If anybody receives word back from the Connecticut Governor's Office, let me know, I believe the flags are in the Governor's Mansion, be diplomatic to everyone! I would just like to know the location and secure a photo if possible. If any of our Northern cousins would visit the place and take a look at the "Hall of Flags", I bet you'll find it. You will also be an official AC forum hero. :D

I have some disappointing news. Yesterday I went to the Hall of Flags at the State Capital and talked to Mrs. Caughman, who preserved and documented the flags in the Hall. On Battle-Flag Day, September 17,1879, all of the flags were presented to the State Capital. The 6th however only turned in their state and national flags, while someone kept the two Confederate battle-flags.
And the search continues.

Someone kept the two Confederate flags, great now somebody's grandma or grandpa will kick the bucket and we will see it on Ebay selling for $100. Just think, one man risked his life for a flag, and the other gave his life for it, now some Joe has the flag in an old box or attic. Keep your eyes open. Thanks for the information, I will write Mr. Gabel, I know he will be very disappointed. .... and the saga continues!
