Hi all,
I am trying to do some research on a company flag, or perhaps a regiment flag, for the 4th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, Delta Rifles Company. I shoot with the 4th Louisiana Delta Rifles N-SSA team and would like to make a historical flag for our team.
There is a fragment of the Delta Rifles flag at the museum in Port Allen, LA:
I am not terribly familiar with the hierarchy of organization of the Confederate Army. Google lead me to this:
Which breaks down the hierarchy as:
Corps - 24,000 to 28,000
Division - 6,000 to 14,000
Brigade - 800 to 1,700
Regiment - 350 to 400
Company – 35 to 40
There is also mention of a "Battalion" which they state as:
"To the extent the word "battalion" was used to describe a military unit, it referred to a multi-company task force of a regiment or a near-regimental size unit."
I found a page here that talks about the 4th Louisiana Battalion, but I do not think this is related to the 4th Louisiana Infantry Regiment:
I believe the Delta Rifles flag may have been donated by a family "Favrot" - I am doing some facebook scrounging to see if I can contact a member of the family who may know something of it.
I used to have this book:
But I loaned it and no longer have it. I cannot remember which company the Delta Rifles were. I believe they started out as one company, but were renamed to another letter designation.
I am given to understand that company flags were seldom used. Perhaps the 4th Louisiana Infantry Regiment flag would be more appropriate to use.
Can anyone direct me to where that flag might be kept?
Any other insights would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve Sheldon
