  • Question for Forum: "Screening'

Hi, Phil Gast, with the Civil War Picket. Researching a Confederate soldier, and this was said about him. Do you know what this means? Was that a specific phrase during the war?

says he scorned "screening" himself during battle

Well we know it means hiding something, as in "cavalry screen," screened by smoke, or skirmishers screening the main body, so I would think they meant he didn't believe in taking cover.

I'd be interested in knowing how well that worked for him...

I thought immediately of using a pard for cover. Screening behind a fellow soldier. That's not dignified or honorable. The rest seems sensible.
