  • Nuckolls Pattern Canteen "Variant"

I have been looking at this Nuckolls pattern canteen. From the label on the artifact, it states that it was the type made by James Thornton Nuckolls in a shop on his farm. It differs a bit from the style that was made by his father, Nathaniel Nuckolls.

According to the website info, the size is 8.5 x 2.25 inches. That is quite a large canteen! His father's canteen is quite small, only holding about a pint to pint 1/2 of liquid. I'm mostly curious about the size difference. Has anyone here actually viewed this canteen? If so, are the measurements accurate?

Also, the manner of attaching the halves together is with hand made copper rivets vs square cut iron nails. There are 3 iron sling loops attached with the copper rivets vs the "staple" pattern used on the other variant. I speculate that the original had a wooden spout that fell out and the drink hole had some cut outs added by the original owner.

Other than that, the lathe pattern looks the same as his fathers canteen.

    Thoughts?
