I have been reading over several boxes of old files in the office and have found scores of North Carolina “Form 40” Special Requisitions and “Form 20” which are regularly scheduled issue items. There are several references that I want to bounce about in separate posts that refer to caps and hats, textile content of issue items, blankets vs. overcoats, rifles and bedding.
Some of these re-enforce the fact that garrison (cool word…) troops in the state were supplied last, with the bulk of the standard issue heading to the ANV regiments.
The most fascinating issues are those of the state equipping artillery at Forts Fisher and Anderson with infantry gear in December ’64 and January ‘65. No lack of materials here and it is a remarkably efficient system.
The first reference I want to provide is FATIGUE HATS and SOLDIERS (soldier’s)CAPS being issued regularly and requested on the forms throughout the war.
Looking a bit deeper in what is here I see that the Fatigue Hats are possibly the black kersey hats (similar in appearance to the McDowell pattern originally issued in the ‘61 warrants). This is the same black wool used to trim the '61 warrant jean sack coats and trousers NC issued. (An earlier thread ''The E.C.N. Green jacket'' displays this black trim)
The Soldiers Caps appear to be, on paper, the jean cloth kepi pattern and was ordered frequently with “red trim”.
Any thoughts?
