    Extraordinary.

    "Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ"...

It's interesting to see how English America was in the mid-19th Century. A flip through George W. Matsell's 1859 The Rogues Lexicon reveals alot of Cockney and rhyming slang being used by the toughs and rogues of New York, to wit:

    apples and pears - stairs
    cain and abel - table
cat and mouse - to keep house
    chalk farm - the arm
    charley prescott - waistcoat/vest
cows and kisses - misses (ladies)
    daisy roots - boots
    jenny linder - window (winder)
read and writre - flight, "He took to read and write with Joe in Daisyvile."

...and 'quids' is used for 'cash.'

Received. “How now about the fifth and sixth guns?”
Sent. “The sixth gun is the bully boy.”
Received. “Can you give it any directions to make it more bully?”
Sent. “Last shot was little to the right.”
Received. “Fearfully hot here. Several men sunstruck. Bullets whiz like fun. Have ceased firing for awhile, the guns are so hot."

The ''presentation'' is a paper label pasted inside the front cover.

It is dated and addressd 1863, New York, but distributed in the South at this time or later. Did the American Bible Society have a working relationship with it's Southern counterpart?

The colporteur's office was located at the Female Acadamy in Goldsboro. A good portion of the grounds have never been developed. The site housed an invalid ward during the war. Scores of fine Confederate buttons have been found there over the years.
